Many non-mumbai folks who have called this overacting don't understand how much the middle/lower-middle/lower classes of Mumbai depend on the locals for their daily commute. Without locals, they wouldn't have jobs. If they miss their regular time local, they lose half day salary.
Local train travellers have a local train family. They get into the same compartment everyday. Sit with familiar faces. Discuss markets, play ludo, some pray a little.

This is a part of their life as much as their family is. They celebrate festivals with their train friends.
People who live in far away suburbs have made careers in South Bombay thanks to the locals. They travel 2-4 hrs by train everyday. Locals allow folks to follow their dreams.

For many, there would be no life without the locals. So when the trains stopped, their lives took a hit.
And trains are not just for the poor and middle classes in Mumbai. You'll find rich businessmen standing in the first class compartments every day. They can afford driving to town in their BMWs, but don't. Because trains are fast and efficient.
Trains make Mumbai what it is.

So when I see this guy kiss the compartment step before entering, I understand the pain he has gone through.

He probably stood in a bus queue for an hour everyday, only to spend double the time in traffic.
Getting back on a local will probably help him get his life back on track. It'll allow him to spend time with family again. It'll allow him to have a routine. It'll allow him to feel secure about his daily commute.
