reminder that esk!mo is a derogatory word used for us. that’s not our name. the history behind it is violent and has everything to do with colonization. not just land theft, but also LOTS of generational trauma and being treated like animals. so please use Inuit instead, or
say the name of the group you’re talking about. there’s like, sub groups (word???) like Inuvialuit, Iñupiat, Kalaallit, Tunumiut, Inughuit, Yupiit, and more, if you wanna go specific, so please use those instead, or if you’re just talking about us generally, try saying Indigenous
peoples of the Arctic, Arctic Natives, or something like that. and just because one out of many aren’t offended doesn’t mean we all aren’t offended, and Arctic Natives reclaiming it or identifying with it doesn’t mean you’re free to call any Arctic Native you see an esk!mo.
you know, you don’t *have* to keep saying it AFTER learning that it’s a derogatory term.... to “prove” that you’ve understood. while still saying it. doesnt make sense that you claim you’ve learned but you’re still saying it.
just dropping this here because now people think my name’s Google. https://twitter.com/tuiugaaraq/status/1351238458648514560
