I first watched Intersexion at @UnityatUNO freshman year & hadn't heard of being intersex before. I was shocked this was new to me since 1 in every 2000 babies is born intersex! It really made me think about society's obsession w a gender binary & how it shuns those who don't fit
Not only is society obsessed with cisnormativity, but heteronormativity as well. Both Jen and Esther talked about how they had to have surgery so they could "have a normal sex life with their husbands." They were forced to go through invasive surgeries to please an imaginary man!
Intersex people assigned females were told their bodies weren't good enough to please a man, and those assigned males were told their bodies weren't good enough to BE a man. The gender binary can be so restricting. And its something that we culturally pretty much just made up!
To tie it in to our readings this week, Eliot's article, “The Truth About Boys and Girls," states that "researchers have found very few notable differences between boys' and girls' brains." How can we continue to force intersex people into boxes that don't even really exist?
