1 The gleam is fading for Marty Schottenheimer.

Remember what this city was like in the mid-1980s — the novelty songs around the clock, the birth of the Dawgs and their Pound at the old stadium, the coach’s undiscouraged optimism in always seeing the light of hope —
2 the gleam
— and the excruciating losses to John Elway’s Broncos on the brink of the Super Bowl?

He could be unashamedly emotional, tearing up regularly. and he could be corny. Many ribald press box comments resulted from his comment after a comeback victory that “The most
3 important six inches in football are between your breastbone and your backbone.”

He never made it to the big game with the Browns and Bernie Kosar or with the Chiefs and Joe Montana. But he sure came close here. His tenure was the Browns’ last as consistent contenders.
4 Football can take a terrible toll on its players. Schottenheimer played six seasons as a NFL linebacker. He has been fighting Alzheimer’s Disease for years.

Marty helped being pride back to the city’s most popular team. He should always be remembered for that.
