Let's start off by saying I've logged my Tesla quite extensively. Specific to this is the tracking of the heat related to the Tegra used in MCU1. That heat is quite hot, I've seen the Tegra go to 85c. That emmc gets very hot. /2
I'm not one for conspiracy theories. Though let's break it down. You cannot get spec sheet for this emmc. If you have it if love to see. Though as far as I know this thing is not industrial rated. /3
The procedure involved is quite a lot to replace this. You must remove the entire front of dash, remove the MCU. These are all from my car. That then requires that you root the MCU. Take your settings on one and transfer to other. /4
I'm sure Tesla uses a different method. That's not the point of course. The point is I've taken my car apart. With assistance I was able to get my car fixed. Now to the details about the emmc. /5
The emmc is generally not tolerant of heat. It sets right by the CPU heatsink it's gonna get hot. This design guaranteed that the heat would be high on the emmc. With any testing of components. How do you calculate MTBF? Why by heating it! That's the way they are things in lab /6
So test conditions to artificially age a emmc is what labs use to compute MTBF. That is actually a logical point to make. Then followed by fsck the squashfs? You can revive the emmc. Remember this is write errors so fsck it. Tell it to go fsck itself. /7
Curious note on fsck? If you repeatedly unplug and plug in a dead MCU? It will automatically fsck after 30 reboots. Neat trick just unplug and plug the thing in over and over. This is not a long term fix of course. To fix it long term? Well the design is fine. /8
You just need to select components.

1) can take the heat and WILL not get out of the kitchen.
2) it's got to be able to handle heavy writes
3) it's got to be bigger.

Now why bigger? Well simply put if you are limited in writes? /9
Multiplication of 8 billion bits with 3000 writes vs 32 billion bits with 3000 writes. Though the industrial chip I chose has more writes. That is the reason to go bigger. The gods demand sacrifice? Well you give them the sacrificial material. /10
That's the determination of what I've read so far is the writes. Nothing to do with heat. I find that to be troubling. Heat just exacerbates any problems. That said having a industrial chipset that is rates to run at these temperatures. /11
When did mine die? 2 years ago? Yeah it's taken this long. The issues were known really fast when I looked at it. Once I saw the issues and what was actually happening? How can Tesla act like it's a non issue? /12
It's unlikely to make you get in a wreck fine Tesla I will give you that. But let's be real here for a second Tesla.

I don't care if I can get in a wreck with my car when it becomes totally non functional without repair. That's what this does is kills your car. /13
You cannot enter your pin to drive, you cannot use the MCU. There is no heater/ac there is no backup camera. You cannot defrost on and on. You can't even charge the car so that means the battery will slowly drain till it destroys itself unless you can get it fixed. /14
That's one thing that is not mentioned, when I was in Breck when this happened? By battery was draining, that I had 28 days to fix my car or the battery was destroyed. Who here thinks that's a awesome side effect. Care to guess how much that costs? This caused me panic. /15
I'm not wanting to be bad about Tesla here. They did enough to be bad about it. I don't need to bad-mouth them their behavior is what I'm stating. They used a off the shelf nvidia board and got burned. Pure and simple. /16
They didn't Innovate that, they bolted on a engineered board. To their credit they are resolving these issues now and this pleases me. I say bravo to Elon and Tesla. That said, those of us who bought cars? Don't treat us like ass. /17
We bought the car, it's obviously defective as the first real interactive display in a car? Don't treat us like imbeciles and make it right. I'm sure everyone is willing to forgive. But hiding that you did some terrible designs when it was "best" and now new stuff is "best". /18
Well that's called evolution, though unlike the real world. Designs that were abandoned? As they were bad? Doesn't mean you need to abandon the customers and act like it's fine. How many of us suffered till NHSTA got involved. /19
