The Jagannath temple chronicles 'Madala Panji', states that the Eastern Ganga dynasty king - Anangabhimadeva III - built the fort by 1230 CE. He reigned during 1211-38 CE.

In 1230, he moved his capital to Barabati (Cuttack) from Kalinganagar (Bhubaneshwar)

Marathas extended fortifications and rebuilt temples within the fort complex.

The fort spreads over an area of 102 acres, surrounded on all sides with stone paved moat of 10 Mtr. wide in [N] & [W] sides, & 20 Mtr. wide in the [E] & [S] sides.

When the fort fell to #British through bribery, it was plundered for its valuable Khondolite stone for constructing roads and other buildings. B4 plunder, it was used as prison for some time.

In late 2018, Orissa Tourism Development Corp announced project to renovate the Fort Complex.

In Sep 2020, Odisha State Govt allotted further Rs.200 crore for Fort development as tourist destination, including boating, musical fountain, etc.
