We still need full details on the government's catch-up programme, but Sir Kevan's appointment is a really promising sign. https://www.tes.com/news/pm-appoints-sir-kevan-collins-covid-catch-tsar
Some more thoughts -
Thread alert
What will his advice be to govt on its “potential plan” for summer schools, given his former organisation the @EducEndowFoundn labelled summer schools “low impact” and “relatively expensive”?

The EEF toolkit says summer schools lead to an extra 2 months of progress. This isn’t amazing considering a @tes poll found nearly a third of teachers said pupils were, on average, at least 6 months behind where they should be https://www.tes.com/news/cost-covid-teachers-grim-figures-learning-loss
And we know - thanks to the EEF - that the gap will be far wider for more disadvantaged kids. https://www.tes.com/news/revealed-two-month-reading-and-maths-covid-19-gap
But: the progress gained through summer schools can be DOUBLED when trained and experienced teachers are involved.
Although, as @HuntingEnglish asked in a piece for @tes - how many trained teachers can deliver an intensive, well-planned summer programme when “many are on their knees after the workload driven by the lockdown”. This was last June… https://www.tes.com/news/will-summer-schools-actually-work
So the government *has* to engage with the profession on this one. And, going back to my first point, appointing Sir Kevan is a good start.
