On this third day of Black History Month, an exercise thread.

you will show up in 2021

SPECIFICALLY

for
Black
Disabled
People.

RT if you don't know how but pledge to learn from this thread.

Like if you're a disabled person of any background.
The thread will be a list of ways.

I'd like the help of #DisabilityTwitter today,

as well as people who don't consider themselves disabled

but have Adjacent cultures such as in the deaf & deaf/blind cultures.
That includes

- neurodivergents,
- mental illness,
- wheelchair users

reply with ways you'd like Ableds to #ShowUpForDisabledPeople .

Black people can optionally add #DisabledBlackTalk to make their requests distinct.

Here are some of mine. They will be Black AF.
1 -

Join our demands for universally available free health care. We can fight about the best way for that to happen but not whether.
#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
2-

Pick an ableist word and make it your mission to remove it from your vocab and point it out to others.

If you're not confrontational try a "hey did you know" with the history of the word.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
3-

Stay out of policing our bathroom stalls & parking spaces.

Since you can't tell by looking who is disabled, you're just making us afraid to pee & park in public.

People try to harm us when we're alone because you do that.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
4- If you have a disabled friend of family member ask them today how you can make their life better.

If you don't have one, make one and ask them in a week.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
5-
Never suggest tips or cures unless I ask. My body doesn't work like yours. Innocent suggestions have nearly killed me because of drug interactions.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
6-

Let me have my Black spaces.
Let me have my Woman spaces.

And by "let me have" I don't mean I need your permission.

I mean allow PEACE to exist there.

So sometimes just... Shut up.

Just shut up and listen and don't spew a story centering you and your perspective.
Especially as a Black woman

I ALREADY have to do the additional labor to CREATE spaces where I feel safe to speak.

To know I'll be heard and supoorted, that my words will have weight and power to cause change.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
THEN I have to constantly defend that space against

trolls,
people who hate me,
people who want to control me,
those who think their message is more important,

and anyone who doesn't want to do the work of creating their own platform.

#DisabledBlackTalk
By the time you start invalidating the point of starting a Black-centered conversation with your "well this other culture too" comment?

I am so fucking tired I don't have the patience to be polite to you anymore.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
You're all doing this particular microagression A LOT.

It is exhausting to spend so many years building spaces that don't exist for people who scream and are unheard and have you come take up all the room in the space.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
Learn how to stop. I don't know how because I don't do this.

Literally my life was at stake. I didn't have a choice. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Or you really think I'd be alive today if I talked over every white male cop who pulled me over for no reason but to harass me?

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople
So I don't know, talk amongst yourselves and figure that shit out.
I may have more later. Let's get this party started so I can elevate voices besides my own.

#ShowUpForDisabledPeople .
#DisabledBlackTalk
Are you learning and growing?

I do take tips. Thanks to a recent generous tip and book sales I can pick up my meds.

But this is part of my work. I give first, you can pay if you're able & so moved.

PS if you’re looking for people to follow, look to the disabled people who liked the first post. But we’ll be talking about that later in the month as well.
This is becoming a whole library! I'm proud of y'all! 🥰♥️
