Good afternoon, Niagara. Here your weekly #COVID19 deep dive. Sorry it is a bit late today. Been busy. As the last few weeks, we have some positive trends, and some rather grim ones. So here we go (thread)
I am going to start with a new, interactive graphic you may have seen in our coverage this week. This graphic allows comparing Niagara's #COVID19 status against other Ontario communities, looking at population, cases, infection and deaths and death rate. https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/5145476/
As you can see, although only a midsized community, Niagara has a very high infection rate per 100,000 and deaths per 100,000. We also have a high number of total deaths, even compared to large communities.
Niagara's #COVID19 infection curve continued its rounding trend with 53 new cases, in line with the downward trend of the pandemic of late. Active cases have also fallen below 1,000 for the first time since Jan. 7.

An easy way to see how the infection rate changes is new cases per day. You can see it appears we are out of the worst of the second wave, at least when it comes to cases. But as Han Solo said, don't get cocky, because there is also more bad news today. https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/2160012/
Another 8 Niagara residents with #COVID19 died, continuing the lethal trend that has shown little sign of slowing down, as the most vulnerable who contracted the virus continue to die. A total of 332 people, ranking the region among Ontario's worst. https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/4841001/
Look at key metrics, Niagara continues to improve a bit, but the rate of that improvement has slowed down. Cases per 100,000 has declined as of Jan. 30. Ontario public health data, updated today, as it is slightly higher. https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/4318172/
And the local reproductive number - the number of people once person can infect - has risen a little bit:

In terms of demographics, we continue to see younger adults are driving new cases each day - a fact that has not changed in months. There is growth across all demographics still, but that is were most daily growth is found.

And that spread among the young continues to reap a high price. The young get sick and spread the virus to older demographics. And the elderly are the ones who continue to die as a result.

Be safe, be smart, and be kind.
