Once the pandemic is over I really think we as a profession need to talk about how teachers fetishise hard work. Is it a thin skinned reaction to the “lazy teacher” jibes? Why are attempts to reduce workload often framed as failing our students? Workplace efficiencies should 1/4
be ruthlessly chased by any managers because it frees up staff to spend more time thinking about their craft. Why is it a bad thing for a teacher to work their contracted hours, stay happy, stay in the job for years? Arguments about teachers will always find more to do should 2/4
squashed; some may be happy to do that and that’s fine but you can’t expect 60 hour weeks while also decrying the retention crisis. It’s time to start really celebrating those who are finding quicker ways of working effectively and stop idolising hero teachers. 3/4
This “way” of working might be what gets you ahead in certain school or MAT cultures but it’s toxic and is going to drive more people out of the profession after two exceptionally tough years. Not to mention the thousands of teachers who have ever left due to these reasons. 4/4
