This is the typical sequence of play that is used to create space for Werner.🔹
- Line breaking pass to striker dropping deep
- Opposition CB follows the striker leaving space in behind
- Werner makes a 3rd man run to exploit space
An important attribute that makes this possible is the pinning of the opposition full backs. Tuchel wants Hudson-Odoi and Alonso to hold width and constantly make runs to keep opposition full backs occupied.

In the video, the right back (#2) cannot follow Werner because of this
Here's an example of this sequence vs Burnley. The striker took a bad touch but you can see the concept in action. Werner prepares to exploit the space and Mount is ready to receive the ball.
This role requires some technical ability so it wouldn't be a surprise to see Pulisic play as a false 9. Good dribblers don't even need a pass to beat a defender. Pulisic could take on the defender and create himself a passing angle into the space that Werner is about to exploit
Another thing to note is that it would be very limiting to have just one pattern. There are a variety of ways the striker can create space for Tammy.
This is a sequence that I thought could be used a lot vs Burnley but when Mount had the ball in between the lines, Tammy Abraham tended to make runs in behind for himself rather than creating space for Werner like in the video
Hudson-Odoi's deep and wide position is so vital for players receiving the ball between the lines. It is one of the keys which allows Tuchel to play through the middle.

If either the LB (#3) or the RCB (#5) step forward to press Mount, they will leave space in behind for runs.
