When automakers sit down with President Biden, here’s what I think he should say:
“Last time I met with you folks in the White House it was to bail your asses out & create regulations to make you cleaner & more competitive. You then spent 4 years lobbying to undermine that.” 1/ https://twitter.com/nytclimate/status/1356723592541708291
"We’re willing to help you out again, but you need to send your engineers & MBAs to DC to work with us. Leave your lawyers & lobbyists behind—enough of that malarkey.”
“So here’s what we’re going to do: for starters, stricter regulations so your gas vehicles pollute less.” 2/
“And we’re going to legislate a schedule for ramping up your sales of electric vehicles out to 2035, when it’ll be illegal to sell a gas or diesel car or truck.”
“That might be tough on you. But adversity builds character. And here’s how we’ll help you out.” 3/
“We’ll keep investing in building out charging infrastructure, so Americans don’t worry about when & where they can charge up.”
“We’ll work with Canada to build a battery industry delivering made-in-North America batteries, with North American metals & minerals." 4/
“We’ll train a unionized workforce to build EVs in America. Might be a few less jobs in assembly, but we’ll create new jobs in battery production.”
“And we’ll ensure all Americans who need it, get a bit of help buying an EV.”
“And you should know—if you’re with me on this…” 5/
“…you have an ally. If you fight this, you should know there are a bunch of scrappy young companies that only build EVs who will gladly eat your lunch—and we’ll help serve it up.”
“Ready to get to work building a better future?” 6/6
