This is a Trumpism. Undermine local authority. Bash unions. Teach public education. And ignore the real problems. If folks really cared about low income kids, they would be working to prevent families from getting evicted.
They would be working to implement robust testing and tracing protocols and wraparound services so families on the brink don’t have to work while sick (which they are now doing because they have no choice.)
They would also be creating the needed infrastructure to test and vaccinate educators.
When we reopen fully, we would be the largest testing operation in the city.
Reminder:
We are an educational institution, not a health care provider:

Reminder:

I know we aren’t the only school district facing this challenge. Without national leadership each and every district has had to navigate challenges that, frankly must be resourced at state and national levels.
Don’t fall for the clickbait. This is the same Trump/DeVos plan.
- Undermine labor
- Make public educators scapegoats for problems cities can’t/won’t fix
- Push back on progressive polices that are dismantling white supremacy and capitalism (which are one in the same.) https://twitter.com/BreeNewsome/status/1281008287371190274

So, to recap, folks are now suing us because we believe in negotiating a safe reopening with the people who do the work. And for “failing” to test and vaccinate more people than our own public health... when we are an education institution.
Who else does that?
Who else does that?

I know we aren’t the only county department of education facing this right wing/neo-liberal backlash. The fact that we have a majority progressive board of color, led by two women of color makes it all the more appealing, I guess.
