Is it me? I've just turned down speaking at a national sector conference. A member of the organising committee asked me to apply & what my fee was for speaking. I submitted my ideas without a fee amount saying I'd want all speakers to be paid the same to cover their time 1/4
or donation to their charity, otherwise it exacerbates inequality as some people can't afford to take the time for free or away from their day job. I also asked about how they were ensuring diversity in their speaker selection. 2/4
I got a complicated & curt response: Platinum Partners, businesses they work with throughout the year & that "some speakers experiences will cost us more than others."...no mention of how they would ensure a diverse set of speakers.
And... 3/4

"we understand that this will make it impossible for you to join us this year" !!!! Their approach feels soooo wrong. With hints of #showthesalary (the more speakers ask for the more they get!) Is there a best practice guide for conference organisers? Thoughts welcome! 4/4
