Used the phrase "God of the Gaps" recently, and got a blank stare, so linking this for everyone's benefit. Very useful phrase. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_the_gaps
Short version: Humans do not possess complete knowledge and likely never will, and a common tactic of theists is to attribute what humans don't yet understand to the divine.

Problem is, those gaps in knowledge have a tendency to be filled as knowledge progresses.
Why does the sun rise? Your god of choice, obviously.
Why are there seasons? Same deal.
Why do people get sick? Yep.

Except not. And so, the eternal search for new, safe gaps to sustain the belief.
Which I guess means the world is full of ever-shrinking gods, for some folks.

Eternally smaller and smaller.

Like that Lily Tomlin movie.
Tangentially related: I remember, during the 80s, listening to religious types characterize HIV as a divine punishment. A genuinely, supernaturally-fashioned scourge.

And now, in isolated cases, it's curable.
Which means the work of eternal, immortal, omnipotent and all-powerful beings can be functionally undone in under 50 years by a 10,000 or so naked apes staring through microscopes.

Cool god y'got there. Very impressive.
That would be like me putting down some glue traps in the basement, and waking up the next day to 10,000 angry mice igniting a kerosene-doused glue trap bonfire in my bedsheets. With FUK YUR GLOOTRAPZ traced on the wall in mouse poop.
