Let's talk about "stay in your lane". What does it mean? It means that allies are the worst people to try talking about in-group issues for communities they are not a part of. It means that, more often than not, they will severely harm that community, even as they try to help. 1/
It means that, very often, "allies" will co-opt the struggle against oppression and use it for profit, even if it reinforces said oppression. It means that marginalized voices will, again, be erased from the discourse as so-called allies dominate it with their shitty opinions. 2/
I am a cis person who talks about "trans stuff" quite frequently, and yet I don't have people yelling at me. HOW CAN THAT BE??? For starters, I stay humble, stay aware of the limitations of my own perceptions, and yield the floor to trans people whenever possible. 3/
FURTHERMORE. My content is NOT "cis guy who explains trans stuff". My content is about disability rights, Deaf and autistic history, and social justice. When I bring up trans issues, it's to underscore the intersections that the trans struggles have with disability struggles 4/
Like how the medical industry is eugenicsy af, and how we are all confined by this fashy societal concept of "normal" and what it means to be a "correct" human being. I do not use the trans people in my audience as a shield from criticism, 5/
I RELY on them to call me out when I say some bullshit. And when they do? I thank them for cluing me in, because honestly they did me a fucking solid. They helped me learn how to better avoid reinforcing transphobia. Criticism is a GOOD THING. Get some goddamn humility.
