1/ It's in just over 16,500 decks on EDHREC so I'm not saying Homeward Path is necessarily underplayed, and it's also not cheap with the lowest-priced copies still over $12, but I also don't think people realize what an absolute blowout it is when you're in a situation to use it.
2/ There's some decks it just shuts down or at least deflects away from you (Merieke, Rubinia, Triplets, Gonti), and how many cards do that on a land that enters untapped and still makes mana?
3/ I've had someone cast a Bribery against me, drop my Avacyn Angel of Hope onto the field, and pass to me while I had a Path in play untapped. I've had someone cast an Insurrection with one out. It's a card that literally stops losses from happening.
4/ Yes, the slots for utility lands are finite, and there's for sure metas where it wouldn't work, but I don't think it has to work very often to justify a slot, and the times it works are often just backbreaking.
