/ Lots of talking today about annual leave, well-being and avoiding burn-out. In more normal times as leaders we encourage staff to take leave through mechanisms like reducing what can be carried forward as well as encouraging them because rest is good. I’m often away this week
/ However, some people are saying work is important daily contact with others and taking leave when they cannot go to stay with family or friends or get away will decrease their mental health not improve it. Indeed others who had leave planned for weddings or special occasions
/ also don’t want to still take that leave and then sit at home dwelling on what could have been, again enhances negative thoughts, rather than clear them out. Nevertheless, we are humans not automatons and do need to take time away from work and thinking about work to stay
/ motivated and bring our best selves to work to lead and/or support and/or collaborate with others. So I will, while being aware of the difficulties individuals may have, continue to lead by encouraging teams to take a break, to close the laptop and put it away, to engage in
/ absorbing tasks and to stop thinking about work. I am away in a couple of weeks, it’s not the holiday I planned, but I’ll spend time cooking, playing music and playing online games with the family. I know I will feel better for it ... wouldn’t you?
