Discussing the dominant platform ecosystems; the Chinese & the American one. They operate differently, but are both intertwined.
The Chinese ecosystem is controlled by the state & mediated by corporations-state capitalism, whereas the American is based on corporate surveillance.

How do platforms exercise power and impact democratic societies and how power is concentrated or distributed?

There is hardly no space for publicness. Fairness, accountability and transparency sit in tension with the market or advertisers values.
Public values aren't fix. They are negotiated between platform users and providers.

If Europe feels squeezed between the two dominant ecosystems, Europe needs to change & re-design the ecosystem’s architecture!
It needs to articulate the principles for a more open and democratic design.
