Yes, I am sure there are supporters who are not toxic. There are many people interested in the alternate cut out of curiosity. But bad apples spoil the broth. And there were plenty of them.
(This also applies to many other fandoms as well that engaged in targeted bullying and harassment campaigns, racism, gatekeeping and more. It is not exclusive, but it deserves to be spoken out against, because online fandoms shouldn't be inherently terrible places.)
(Of course the reason why so many become terrible in them is because they think by becoming a major part of those communities, that the things they like should listen to them and they feel they can exert power over it and the community. Even when that's non-existent.)
