It's Ph.D. Interview Season.
It can be hard to pick up on red flags about PIs, because current students may have to put themselves at risk in being honest with you.
What should you look for?

Here are signs current students are able to be honest w/ you (grad applicants) about their PI.
-You meet with current students w/o PI
-You're asked to hold students answers about PI confidential
-Student answers are straightforward & clear (not avoidant or hedging)

Of course, you're looking for mostly positive responses. Remember, no one is perfect. The key is whether the lab + PI are a good fit for what you want + need to further your education!

Try to get more than one opinion. Student are individuals + experiences vary!

3/4
PIs be transparent.
-Let current students meet with applicants without you there.
-Let current students and applicants know that information shared about you should be private between them!

If you're doing right by the lab, this should be no problem!
