@MittRomney tells the @WSJ that @JoeBiden's team "must be clear-eyed in both understanding and pushing back against the threat that China poses.”
The problem is Mitt Romney does not understand the nature of that threat: he greatly exaggerates it. 1/9 https://www.wsj.com/articles/bidens-china-policy-to-be-steered-by-team-of-rivals-11612348201

As I wrote last May, "Romney inflates the threat posed by Beijing, feeding into a reckless new Cold War narrative. He... advocat[es] a protectionist & over-militarized strategy that will... weaken our economy at a time [of] a serious recession." 2/9 https://www.deseret.com/opinion/2020/5/3/21241981/utah-senator-mitt-romney-reckless-china-rhetoric-risks-new-cold-war
"Romney argues that China poses a... geopolitical challenge on both military & economic fronts based on inaccurate assessments of Chinese strategy and power. Most egregiously, he characterizes China’s grand strategy as one of 'economic, military and geopolitical domination.'" 3/9
"Although China is seeking to increase its influence commensurate to its growing economy and population size, it is not seeking a strategy of 'domination,' particularly not at a global level." 4/9
"Romney also disregards the innumerable ways America... benefit[s] from economic integration with China. If anything, China’s rise & the coronavirus crisis should compel the US to emphasize diplomatic cooperation and economic investments over military confrontation." 5/9
Fast forward 9 months, & Romney is raising alarm bells the US & China might work together to lead out in negotiating a new international climate change agreement.
Yet this is *exactly* what America must do if we are to combat the greatest transnational threats we face. 6/9

@JohnKerry is right that US-China climate cooperation doesn't require trading on other issues or striking a grand bargain--no one is calling for that. Nor does it preclude taking a strong stance against China's human rights abuses or pressing for a more favorable trade deal. 7/9
This is precisely the kind of "competitive coexistence" that NSC director @jakejsullivan & NSC Indo-Pacific director Kurt Campbell called for in the pages of Foreign Affairs.
On the climate issue, then, it seems the media may be exagerrating divides in Biden's team. 8/9

@JoeBiden should empower @JohnKerry to press ahead with US-China climate cooperation, then, undeterred by Romney's anxieties, which are informed by a faulty understanding of China--and a strategic vision at odds with that of everyone on @JoeBiden's team, not just Kerry. 9/9
@JessLee_DC, @Dalzell60, and I offer specific recommendations for how the Biden team could proceed in promoting enhanced US-China climate (& public health) cooperation in our recent @QuincyInst report:
