“They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South” by Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers

-Exposes the role of white women in slave ownership, arguably one of the best kept secrets of racist America.
“The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” by Michelle Alexander

-Alexander covers issues specific to the mass incarceration of black men in America. The title really says it all for this one. A must read.
“Exiles of Eden” by Ladan Osman

-Osman is a Somali born poet whose works primarily center on her Somali-Islamic heritage.
-Explores the traumas resulting from the isolation and displacement of people over multiple generations.
“The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson

-Narrative of the mass migration of black Americans out of the South.
“Answering the Call” by Nathaniel R. Jones

-Jones was an appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals (retired 2002), worked as a an attorney, law professor and was a part of the general counsel of the NAACP. This book highlights the efforts he put forth to fight for racial justice.
"Between the World and Me" by Ta-Nehisi Coates

-Composed as a letter to Coates' son encompassing the reality of being black in America and the "racist violence that has been woven into American culture."
