On National Women and Girls in Sports Day, I want to share some of my favorite stories of young women & girls in the Rochester area who have made an impact on their game. I’m inspired by their stories, and hope they do the same for you! Women belong in sports, today & everyday

University of Rochester’s @GreenwoodBeth5 starts us out. Greenwood broke the barrier for women in baseball in one of the oldest amateur leagues in the country! She’s also a body double in the upcoming League of Their Own series

It’s no secret that @DyaishaFair is taking the college basketball world by storm. The @UBwomenshoops PG and captain just hit 1000 points last weekend (as a sophomore!) and is a finalist for the 2021 Nancy Lieberman Award. She’s going places, pay attention. https://www.rochesterfirst.com/sports/college-sports/dyaisha-fairs-passion-for-basketball-is-larger-than-life/
There’s no better comeback story than @lady_bombers senior captain Hannah Griffith. After finally entering remission before the season began, Hannah helped ERFH win their first sectional title since 2009. She’s the definition of a fighter

You all know @PrimetimeBall_ is THE woman in Rochester hoops. She’s a fierce advocate for her student athletes, for education, and for helping the community. This article only highlights part of what Karen does, but she makes ROC a better place

Four sport athletes became more common this year due to some cancelations. @SchroederSports sisters Anya and Mariah Watkins picked up tennis this summer as something to do, but their varsity career helped them get ready for basketball, volleyball, and T&F. https://www.rochesterfirst.com/sports/high-school-sports/webster-schroeder-sisters-add-tennis-to-their-lengthy-athletic-resume/
It’s a twin thing for @ashleysampone and @TaylorSampone. The two were stars for @PLaxGirls during their high school years, and are now freshman who hope to do the same for @LouisvilleLax https://www.rochesterfirst.com/sports/high-school-sports/from-section-v-to-the-acc-the-sampone-twins-have-opponents-seeing-double/
I can’t make this thread without mentioning the Pigtail Ninja! JJ is the definition of small but mighty. She’s won countless ninja competitions around the country, and even competed on American Ninja Warrior! She even got me up the 12 warped wall

Football is for everyone. @HiltonCadets grad Sydney Alloco proved that when she became the first woman to play football for the Cadets. A soccer player turned kicker, she inspired me the way @SarahFuller_27 inspired the nation https://www.rochesterfirst.com/sports/high-school-sports/hilton-varsity-football-adds-first-female-player/
I don’t think there’s anyone who wants to win more than @CuseWLAX @ejaneh0803. Hawryschuk led the nation in scoring before an abrupt end to her senior season. Now she’s back for her fifth year to chase a National Championship for the Orange @VictorGirlsLax https://www.rochesterfirst.com/sports/college-sports/hawryschuk-leads-nation-in-scoring-but-has-unfinished-business-at-syracuse/
Women’s sports coverage is so important at all levels. Tell the stories of girls changing the game at their high schools, college women chasing their pro dreams, and the ones who get to live it on a national stage. It’s an honor to do this job and share their stories with you
