In Uganda, leading opposing presidential candidate (Bobi Wine) to the incumbent (President Yoweri Museveni) has called for an ICC investigation into the government of his political rival, citing oppressive tactics in the build-up to Museveni's 6th term #POLI432 1/
Museveni has rejected the usefulness of the ICC in the past. Given the apparent violations of journalist’s and citizen’s rights, the ICC may be needed. In a separate statement, Museveni’s administration has claimed that Uganda is a “peace loving country,” 2/
... yet the police inspector general openly refuses to apologize to journalists, stating, “we shall beat you for your own sake.” The ICC’s duty is to complement domestic courts and ensure that crimes are prosecuted. 3/
As of this week, Museveni has been declared the winner of Uganda’s elections (results being contested by his challenger Mr. Wine), so it is unlikely he would allow the courts to prosecute his current administration. The ICC has the duty to intervene. 4/4 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/08/world/africa/uganda-election-bobi-wine-icc.html
