Who is getting their coffee ready and C-SPAN streaming for @teachcardona's confirmation hearing this morning? 🙋🏻‍♀️
Dr. Cardona was not my first choice, but I'm excited to have someone who doesn't need the idea of equity explained to him.
All of the problems that @PattyMurray outlines could be fixed with appropriate technology support while we have a paid lockdown to get to COVID zero.
This whole opening highlights how we expect schools to serve every single need of children without appropriate support. I'd love to see a HELP committee that takes on the *why* we expect schools to fill every hole created by poverty and racism.
Okay, finally! Yes, let's talk about what schools can do to undermine inequality. Also, I'm dreading the Republican ranking member's screed. I think today that's going to be Sen. Burr.
Richard Burr saying health care is his most important reason for being on this committee while not wearing a mask. 🙄
That JAMA "paper" was an opinion piece explicitly not associated with the CDC. And we still haven't heard about the majority of students choosing to learn at home.

I'm always amazed at Republicans who think that Washington's existence is the problem serving in Washington. It makes me think of this (h/t @WarrenEducators): https://twitter.com/mcropper1/status/1356983117131694081
The discussion about Dr. Cardona's career path as a "rise" highlights for me the ways in which we need ways for teachers to advance in their profession that don't necessarily equal leaving the classroom forever.
As someone who would like to have a larger impact but misses my kids, making career paths for teachers is really important to me personally.
Dear @ChrisMurphyCT, please, wear a mask if you're going to committee meetings in public!
Teachers spending their own money on supplies isn't a feel good story. @teachcardona does sound like he was an excellent principal.
I think Dr. Cardona, like President Biden, has a really powerful backstory that can inspire students. I hope when it's safe we'll see a lot of him in schools with kids.
Dr. Cardona says that he's an advocate for all students, and that's great! But I still haven't heard anything about the majority of families and students choosing to stay at home even when buildings are open.
I also feel so frustrated when we divorce school reopening from virus control in the surrounding community. Educational leaders can't do that. Political leaders must.
His praising of students is really nice. I feel like he's met some students, unlike the last lady here!
Given how little the Education Secretary can actually do for individual district's decisions, this focus is starting to feel myopic. There's so much else that goes on in the Department that we need to be talking about!
Yes! Bringing in students *just* for a standardized test is such a bad idea in the middle of a pandemic. Now, let's talk about the appropriate way to incorporate testing going forward.
