Inspired by some amazing people in my life who threw me a surprise zoom bday party yesterday, I’ve decided to share some #failforward moments I’ve experienced. We don’t share enough failures, so here are some of mine: #medtwitter #MedEd
1. Failed miserably on the test that would have granted me a position in the residency program I wanted to go to in Brasil. It sucked, but I ended up in a training program that gave me the opportunity to meet people who would inspire and help me in my journey to be where I am.
2. I have applied to dozens of positions in major PCCM societies and have received an average of four “no” to each “yes”.
3. I have had more rejections to each paper I have published than I can count right now.
4. I have had attendings telling me I would never be able to be where I am and I have had people from different walks of life telling me I am too much of somethings and too little of others.
All those examples I am sharing sucked, and they hurt me for a while and they made me feel like I didn’t deserve and didn’t belong. But they also made me stronger and more appreciative of all I have now.
So in the wise words of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards: “ You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need”
Let’s normalize #failforward, shall we #medtwitter ? And celebrate realizing, even if it only happens years later, that we will always get what we need. Happy Wednesday!
Thank you to the amazing friends who inspire me so much, every day. And inspired me to share these little words of encouragement with the #Twitterverse @elisecarey @RahmaWarsameMD @CaThompsonMD @BonnesSara
