After learning that my little sister is losing grades for having her webcam off in her online virtual classroom, I'm angry about this all over again: https://twitter.com/thoughtsofaphd/status/1338843520413671424
The teacher: "everyone needs to turn their webcams on, if we were in a classroom, we'd all be seeing each other, right?"
The thing is: you're not in a classroom
Not everyone is eager to invite 30 ppl they've never met into their bedrooms to stare at their face for a few hrs/day

There are SO MANY reasons why someone might not want to turn their camera on, here's another one: in the rural area where she lives, her internet connection is unreliable and when everyone is sharing video, she gets kicked out of the classroom call because it lags out.
In that case, turning webcams on is having the exact opposite effect on her learning experience: it's impeding her ability to participate and learn.
This is absolute nonsense.

This is what my little sister's teacher just said to her, forcing her to turn on her webcam
Teacher doesn't 'like' looking at profile pics? Your students don't 'like' online learning, either
She has the 'right' to see their faces? No, students have the right to privacy

Virtual learning is hard - for everyone. Leave your arbitrary expectations at the virtual classroom door & extend your students some much-needed understanding & empathy while they try their best to learn, at home, in whatever way is most comfortable for them - DURING A PANDEMIC
