My advice to Muslim academics is to be wary of ‘ujub (self amazement) and kibr (arrogance/egoism); two of the main spiritual diseases of the heart. Remember, it is only Allah who has blessed and enabled you to do what you do.

This must increase a sense of gratitude and humility. What you do is a gift from Allah. Fundamentally, it has nothing to do with you. Denying this is a form of ignorance of one’s Lord. Significantly, having ikhlas (sincerity) means that you should seek to make an impact.

Ivory tower type of academic work is usually a manifestation of the ego. If you're not seeking to make an impact, you're probably just satisfying your ego. Reflect on your WHY. If it's blameworthy, fix it by asking: “what does Alah want from me?”

Once you answer this, the HOW will be easy. Try to develop and empower others, and seek ways to make your work accessible & impactful.
May Alah grant us all success. May He help us diminish our egos, increase our gratitude and help us to seek what is most pleasing to Him.
