I first drafted this essay months ago and the first readers thought I’d better do more to define this weird movement I was using as an example. Most people hadn’t heard of QAnon. https://projectinfolit.org/pubs/provocation-series/essays/lizard-people-in-the-library.html
So in the last week of January I had to update it a bit. I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of it, but really what I was arguing was we need to understand information in terms of systems.
How do different media decide what issues are important? How do they validate info? How does it circulate, and who gets a say?
We tend to reach students a very limited set of information consumerism techniques. Where to shop, how to select good quality, how to display what you found. There’s so much more going on. And it matters.
