THREAD: The Art of Finding a Great Mentor

I’ve been lucky enough to have some amazing mentors.

I’ve also done a lot of mentoring.

If you’re struggling to find a mentor, I’ve got some tips for you...
First let’s look at why it’s difficult to find a mentor.

1. Most of us don’t know successful people in real life. I didn’t.

2. They aren’t accessible. They are not giving out their mobiles.

3. Because there are only so many hours in a day. They’re busy!
It’s a large commitment of time and energy for them. You need to make it easy to mentor you.

Enter Twitter!

The single best way to find mentors that I have ever seen.

The ease is simply mind blowing.

But I’ll get to that in a moment.

First...
Read Great Books.

It’s a cheat code.

Great authors are the mentors that you’ll never meet.

A mentor isn’t just someone who you spend face to face time with.

A biography can take 40 years of experience and bundle it up into 300 pages for you.
The Twitter Way

Social Media has changed the game when it comes to finding mentors.

The time requirement for a mentor is so much lower.

They can choose when and how they can help.

There are so many great examples on here.

So here’s some tips...
1. Work out your niche

2. Follow top accounts in niche

3. Engage, add value

4. Buy their book/guide. They will be more likely to help if you have supported them.

5. Reach out and ask questions based on their content. Build a relationship.

6. Be normal.
What NOT to do

- Ask for someone to ‘mentor’ you. It will scare them off.

- Annoy them with too many questions. Respect their time.

- Expect it for free. It may be, but it might not be. This is why buying their products is a good idea.
A Short Story to Finish

I had a very smart University student who worked in one of my companies.

He wanted to be mentored by my business partner and I.

With everything we had on, it was difficult for us to commit to the time required.
So I set him a challenge.

Find a problem in my business that needed a solution and create a business out of it.

My mentorship would come with an investment.

So he did. I provided startup capital for his company.

What does he get?
He runs his business out of my premises for free.

We catchup 2 or 3 times per week.

His first 14 customers and $40k of PROFIT came from people I know.

It’s a relationship that works well for both of us.
Lesson? In real life it’s possible to find a mentor, just a bit more difficult.

You need to be a problem solver.

But...It’s right under your nose here on Twitter.

Don’t miss it.

Think; Who are you following that could change your life?
Thanks for getting this far.

If you think others may get some value from it feel free to retweet.
