Okay, finally distilled my thoughts properly. A lot of SotC seems centered around giving players a reason to engage with the content that’s already on offer rather than pumping out novelty in lieu of the reduced capability to create “new” experiences at a fast clip... (THREAD 🧵)
This manifests in strikes new & old coming to the game, new Trials gear, gear that you can chase exclusively by engaging with core playlists, etc. What gets me excited about this season is the fact that it’s imo, a different, arguably better approach for Destiny going forward.
At some point, we do have to come to the realization that having a Season of Opulence size drop season over season isn’t really viable anymore, and trying to pursue that model every season isn’t always going to land. But SoO style novelty is only one way to engage players.
The other way is to increase depth rather than breadth. This is a massive game, and by focusing on the core, new strikes, new incentives, new loot, new Crucible maps and modes, in addition to a bit of plot and a new activity peppered in, players can always have a reason to play.
Investing in the core, deepening what we have every season to give players fun, new reasons to engage. We spend a lot of time focusing on sheer content volume, especially in light of D2Y1, but I think it’s time to let that go and embrace a smarter, healthier approach to Destiny.
I really do think that’s the brightest path for Destiny to take, and while the coming season isn’t a full pivot to that approach, I hope that’s what it signifies. And if it lands right, it’ll only reinforce the idea that it’s the right approach going forward. Here’s to hoping.
