It makes you think, 'why do I bother defending this institution? why not just let the market rip?'. Obviously I don't actually think that's desirable, but it's got to the point now where I don't think the university as an institution can be reformed. We need something else.

But even if an alternative was set up, perhaps something along the lines of the Workers' Educational Associations', no one - not even supposedly radical academics - would jump ship. The prestige of the university has been internalised. It's a cult, one that deludes many of us.
