I wrote an op-ed for @PostOpinions arguing that the way Congress allocated the recent $25B in emergency rental assistance to the states is inefficient and inequitable. http://tinyurl.com/yc3ykq5a (Thread: 1/6)
I made some plots that weren't included in the piece, so I decided to eat some crow, join twitter, and post them here. (2/6)
Basic point of the piece: when Congress allocated aid by total population, they ignored the fact that some states have proportionately more renters than others. This is esp. true of big states. (3/6)
That variation, plus a minimum of $200M to all states, means that smaller states end up with much more in rental aid on a per-renter-household basis. (4/6)
Another way of looking at this: per-renter-household aid across the 50 states + DC varies dramatically. Almost $3K/renter household in WY, under $400 in NY. (5/6)
More rental aid will be needed in the coming months. @JoeBiden wants another $25B in the next stimulus plan! Let's direct that where it's most needed and in ways that will keep as many families as possible safely housed. (6/6)
