sometimes I get people who are incredibly, rabidly upset about some of my work being "harmful" or "impure" and demanding that I stop creating things or interacting with people
its not right-wing conservatives that say this, but often young queer people who are supposedly liberal
its not right-wing conservatives that say this, but often young queer people who are supposedly liberal
and I don't say this to imply that because I'm queer or trans or anything else that my work shouldn't be criticised bc imo the point of art is, to some extent, to be criticised
but it is very telling that a not insignificant portion of LGBTQ youth, armed with radfem rhetoric and misplaced anger, will see a queer creator making content about certain sensitive topics - sex, mental illness, drug use, queerness, gender, bigotry, assault
and attack them
and attack them
queer creators are disproportionately attacked for creating "imperfect" queer content, and god forbid you create "imperfect" queer characters
but why bother creating art at all if not to explore our imperfections?

none of my fiction is intended as some sort of moral guide to anything, but now and then I get some angry abuse about how "disgusting" or "nauseating" my work is, because sometimes i write about bad things
increasingly discourse from young rhetoric filled queer youth who are demanding "pure and wholesome" queer content only and rhetoric from evangelical Christian and right-wing organisations is barely indistinguishable
both of these groups imply that to write about certain sensitive topics is paedophilia, is abusive, is harmful, etc, when it's just an excuse to harass or dogpile creators
it's just that one side actually says the word "sinful"and the other just thinks it really really hard
it's just that one side actually says the word "sinful"and the other just thinks it really really hard
and it is no surprise that both groups fundamentally target queer and trans folk, especially those who are GNC, BIPOC, disabled and chronically ill people, etc etc
because fundamentally what they want is for "imperfect" people to disappear completely. their goal is eradication

i don't believe in "cancel culture", but I do believe in a very dangerous thread of extremely puritan, extremely dangerous rhetoric that runs through certain communities that are both left and right wing
this rhetoric seeks to destroy that which is not "Pure" and "Good"
this rhetoric seeks to destroy that which is not "Pure" and "Good"
and reader, I do my best to be a moral and ethical person, I explore topics in my work from that standpoint and I try to be kind
but I'm not "Pure" and I'm not inherently "Good"
no one is.
to expect it of anyone is fundamentally going to be dangerous and harmful
