It’s off-season so what better to do, than take a look at Formula One history?
33 drivers have won the championship. But who were the best, that were never crowned? This is my attempt at a top 10. #F1

François Cevert

David Coulthard
Rubens Barrichello

10. JUAN-PABLO MONTOYA
Wins: 7
Best year: 2003
JPM had the best car at his disposal for much of the 2003 season, but the tyre war and Ferrari upgrades meant he missed his best chance of toppling Michael Schumacher. #F1

9. FELIPE MASSA
Wins: 11
Best year: 2008
World Champion for 38 seconds before Hamilton passed the finish line ahead of Timo Glock to secure the final point he needed. Massa didn’t reach this level again due to his ’09 injury. #FormulaOne

8. BRUCE MCLAREN
Wins: 4
Best year: 1960
In only his 2nd full season he pressured team-mate Jack Brabham to the title. The team he started was on the up, when he lost his life in a fatal crash. It won the title a few years later. McLaren’s legacy lives on with his team. #F1

7. JEAN ALESI
Wins: 1
Signed with 3 teams at once in 1990, then choose Ferrari over Williams and spent his best years in underwhelming cars, while Williams dominated 1992 and 1993. His career could have been so much different had he chosen Williams. #F1

6. TONY BROOKS
Wins: 6
Best year: 1959
A cancelled Belgian GP (where he would have been favourite) and a failed clutch change at Monza robbed him of the points he needed to beat Jack Brabham.

5. JACKY ICKX
Wins: 8
Best year: 1970
Hampered by terrible reliability he could have beaten Jochen Rindt to the ’70 title. In the end Ickx didn’t want it as Rindt had been tragically killed at Monza. #F1

4. GILLES VILLENEUVE
Wins: 6
Best year: 1979
Had he ignored team orders at Monza in ’79, he could have beaten Scheckter to the title. In ’82 and ’83 the Ferrari was comfortably the best car, but Villeneuve lost his life in a fatal accident in early ’82. What could have been?

3. RONNIE PETERSON
Wins: 10
Best year: 1973
He took 9 pole positions and led 40% of the laps in ’73. He retired from the lead twice and lost a home win to a slow puncture. #F1

2. CARLOS REUTEMANN
Wins: 12
Best year: 1981
Pole on debut. Four times top 3 in WDC. Would likely have won ’81 if not for in-team battle with Jones - instead neither won. Left Williams two races into ’82 - his new team-mate (Rosberg) then won the title in a chaotic season. #F1

1. STIRLING MOSS
Wins: 16
Best year: 1958
Moss could’ve won the title multiple times, but ’58 stands out. He defended rival Mike Hawthorn who had been dsq'ed in Portugal losing 7 pts. Due to Moss, he got reinstated in 2nd place. Moss eventually lost the title by 1 point. #F1
