Lotta folks asking “well what could we do to be better allies” and I’m gonna use this as an example how the people who could have allied themselves didn’t: https://twitter.com/emilygorcenski/status/1356717185243238405
First, my team could have staged a protest and refused to play or demanded refunds. They did not.
Second, my team and others in the league could have spoken with management. They did not.
Third, I could have been given legal support. I was willing to pay. Nobody would take the case. I reached out to the ACLU and Lambda Legal. Both blew me off. One lawyer wrote a strongly worded letter and then ghosted.
Fourth, the Human Rights Council could have handled my complaint. They did not. The instead let it sit for a year and failed to investigate it until it was too late to do anything.
Fifth, the city council could have strengthened the nondiscrimination ordinance. I even met with then-mayor Mike Signer, the first of a series of disappointing failures by Signer. No action was taken.
Sixth, cis people could have petitioned the HRC or the city council for the same.
Seventh, cis folks could have taken up boycotts of Mark Brown’s other businesses to spread awareness and pressure him financially to reverse course. They did not.
Eighth, state representatives could have introduced stronger nondiscrimination bills. Or even taken my calls. Either or.
