#UCUNEC ballot papers arriving. I’m branch sec at @bcu_ucu standing for one of 3 Mids seats. I believe regional NEC members have a crucial role to play in connecting branches with central decisions, building inter-branch solidarity, & supporting branch officers across the region.
When I had the privilege of representing Mids FE members I reported to branches & both regional committees on every national meeting, congress & sector meeting, which I would do once more. I believe that the trust given when elected must be repaid by transparent accountability.
I also prioritised linking local campaigns & disputes with our national structures, supporting pickets, speaking at branch meetings & bringing local issues to #UCUNEC for national support. If you elect me you will elect a representative who works with you to amplify your branch.
Our 25% increase in membership & recent Covid ballot win at BCU come after a long period of no industrial activity. They reflect lots of committee work, strong ethos of collectivity & regular communication with & participation of members. #UCUNEC
I believe these are the principles we need at national level. I am a @UcuLeft candidate which means I support member-led decisions, industrial organising to face our sector challenges, and equality organising beyond campaigning as key trade union values.
I support Alan Barker (also Midlands seat), who has demonstrated his commitment to safeguarding the democracy of UCU in resisting strong pressure as congress business chair to rule out motions politically critical of the then GS. All elected power must be accountable. #UCUNEC
I also encourage Mids FE, ACE & prison ed members to vote for the phenomenal Dharminder Chuhan, another candidate who supports member-led branch decisions & the crucial role which regions play in branch development. His commitment to democratic organising would push UCU forward.
There are political differences between different candidates. This year there are once more 3 factions, with one still not declaring on the paper (thank you UCU commons for now doing this). Read statements, check the make-up of slates, support active members. #UCUNEC
Crucially, while we all differ in terms of positions on equality, the leverage of balloting & taking action in making change, & how to engage & involve members in decisions (survey alone or debate together?) we all care deeply for our union! Whoever you vote for, please vote!
