Since the turn of 2014 NDA was successful in creating an environment through their initial campaigning which pushed for Presidential like elections. Hence Parties campaigned via the name of a single leader "the face of the party".

Never before 2014, govts. would be called
"Modi govt." Or "Mamata Govt" or "Kejriwal Govt" so on and so forth albeit the latter two not on the same scale as the Modi govt but you get the point.

Hence it becomes imperative that any said political party should have an astute political leader who has both the awareness
and people's approval to be the face of that party & not have some "privileges" by virtue of which they become the next candidate to be the face.

Now when people start identifying the party with a face( given they meet the criteria to be 1) the political discourse
takes another direction which by all means moves towards a more competitive and hence more beneficial future for the avg voter because the one party just can't bull doze their way to a victory and it won't be a walk over and even if they win, they will have to face
A competent OPPOSITION.

Prime example being Delhi, WestBengal, Punjab and some other states.

BJP can't seem to win in these states because they don't have a face a local leader to topple the already established faces there.
Hence at national level
as well its absolutely necessary that you need a competent, aware& a leader of the masses who could lead the opposition. If you arent happy with the current one then you identify who could be the one (I am sure UPA has many competent leaders in their ranks who could be just that)
to lead the charge.

For our democracy to work and not fall on its face flat, we need an OPPOSITION and their face has to someone who isn't a man child.

Its as simple as that &then only then you can take on the ideological extremism front that the current govt is propagating.
