i was reading this article, which is actually about the "right to be forgotten," which is a concept i know little about, and instead ended up learning about the incredibly tragic case of aída curi in the process.

aída, a child of syrian immigrants, was born in belo horizonte, minas gerais, but moved to rio w/ her mother & 4 siblings as a child when her father died. at 18, she was coming home from a typing class w/ a friend when she was approached & robbed by three men (2/?)
she went after them bc they had stolen her glasses & her purse, which contained the money she needed to get home. they dragged her into the elevator of a building undergoing construction, where - upon reaching the 12th floor - they proceeded to beat her (3/?)
they bit, punched, scratched, & strangled aída. she tried to fight back, but the violence was so intense she fainted before the men could carry out the rape they had planned. they then threw her from the building, killing aída, whom the men (lying in court) said had jumped (4/?)
aída's story was reimagined in 2004 by the globo network for a segment on tv show abt crime, & her family sued, but lost several times in court. they were traumatized by their experience w/ an aggressive & uncharitable press from the time her aída's murder (5/?)
the article goes into legal proceedings that are far beyond my limited knowledge law to understand, but might be worth reading for ppl interested in q?s of press freedom, privacy, & access to historical records. i was far more interested in the story behind it. (6/?)
though it did not result in any specific laws at the time, aída's murder, in terms of its socio-historical importance in brazil, seems somewhat on par with the murder of maria da penha or, for a US case, the murder of kitty genovese. her killers eventually went free. (6/6)
