I can’t believe how much I enjoyed watching the @AppleTV+ (and Israeli broadcaster, Kan) espionage thriller, #Tehran. It’s beautiful to look at, it’s intricately and edge-of-your-seat plotted, and it’s very young and fresh. I couldn’t stop watching - a total binge!
I was fortunate enough, many years ago, to go to Iran twice as a very young film journalist to film festivals in Tehran, and to travel to Isfahan (one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited), Persepolis and Shiraz, and out into the desert to watch a movie being shot...
I loved the people I met in Iran, especially the young people, and while I was very politically naive at the time, I could sense that some major change was coming, just talking to them and seeing how I was treated by security for hanging out with some of them...
I remember once returning to my hotel room, after having been warned off (by the hotel) some friends I had made, only to find a gun belt and a police officer’s uniform on my bed, and the Iranian policemen showering in my shower! I assumed this was intimidation!
Despite a few incidents like this, I mostly loved the people I met in Iran (I also made a lifelong friend of an Italian film journalist), and it has saddened me that the country has been painted as a single-minded enemy “bad actor” in news and most entertainment...
That’s why I was so thrilled by the complexity and beauty of #Tehran on @AppleTV+. The Israelis and Iranians alike are portrayed as complicated, fully three-dimensional human beings, and their lives, families and a central love affair feel honest and unexpected...
If you want to read about it before watching the show, this article @ForeignPolicyPR https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/09/24/tehran-israel-iran-spy-apple-tv-series/ is excellent.
But you could also just dive in and watch: it’s fantastic, absolutely gripping and has great characters and performances...

What amazed me was that it is so very long since I have been to Iran, and #Tehran is shot (expertly) in Greece (with some aerial shots of Tehran), and yet it made me incredibly nostalgic for my time in Iran. I feel I was so lucky to see the country when I did.
For those who love the show, there will be a second season of #Tehran, made as an @AppleTV original: https://www.google.com/amp/s/variety.com/2021/tv/news/tehran-renewed-season-2-apple-tv-plus-1234892338/amp/
One thing I’d like to add to this thread is that in addition to #Tehran on @AppleTV being an edge-of-your-seat incredibly well balanced espionage/hacking thriller, the music by extremely talented Israeli musician #MarkEliyahu is fantastic.
