I have NO PATIENCE for ignorant (white, English-speaking) people who come to Taiwan and have the audacity to call #Taiwanese a dialect.
Sussex English is a dialect. Californian English is a dialect. Taiwanese is NOT a dialect. Taiwanese has its own dialects.

If Portuguese and Spanish are separate languages, Taiwanese is a language.
My take: it’s a way to mesh all non-European languages into the same bag, simplifying our culture because it isn’t part of the Western World. Making it easier to digest
for White English speakers.

(Based on personal experiences

Anyways. The person who asked me wasn’t just asking out of curiosity, but defending his view even when I told him Taiwanese isn’t a dialect.

**I NEED to clarify why i said white, English-speaking. I see that I may have phrased it badly, I DO NOT mean:
white English-speaker = ignorant people
What I mean is... (said this in a reply somewhere else)

1. we live in a western-centric world, with highly differentiated and nuanced understanding of Western cultures, languages, etc.
2. If a non-Eng speaker confuses language and dialect, it would be very unfair for me to call them out just because of varying lang. skill
