An Open Letter to all Ontario Students,

We know. We know it’s hard to stay home all day, every day, repeating the same routine. We know you’re tired, we’re all in the same boat. What we also know is that it’s the only way we’ll fight COVID-19. The more people that leave their—
homes to see friends outside their circle, host parties/gatherings, or for non-essential reasons, the further we get from lifting our lockdown, which means the more our high school experiences are taken away. While it is undeniably true that the pandemic has snatched away many—
of the experiences we take for granted, now more than ever, we must refrain from physically socializing with large groups until lockdown and other similar restrictions are lifted. This is a measure intended to protect our futures.
Think about it this way: if hanging out with your friends increased your chances of contracting stomach flu, and you knew that keeping your physical distance from your friends’ for a while could mitigate the chances of you being in such—
pain; would you run the risk of being sick by regularly hanging out with them? Similarly, contracting COVID-19 is a risk that is not here to stay, it will eventually be gone. Knowing that, would you not want to limit your exposure to this temporary threat?
While we understand—
While we understand—
as students that it is difficult to stay home, we must recognize the impacts of going out and not adhering to public health guidelines from the government and scientists. Even if you, and the other people you are seeing, have all been listening to public health officials and—
quarantining up until that point: you are still at risk of being asymptomatic / possibly receiving the virus from someone who has it.
Whether you have been seeing people or not, the people you live with could be going to the grocery store, work, or school. That means that your—
Whether you have been seeing people or not, the people you live with could be going to the grocery store, work, or school. That means that your—
“bubble” of contacts and people who may have been in contact with or had COVID-19, increases exponentially. When you go outside with friends or family and risk the safety of everyone involved, you only make it harder for front line workers and nurses/doctors, and you make this—
situation last longer. To prevent families and friends from having to mourn loved ones who pass as the result of COVID-19, as nearly 2.2 million people worldwide have had to do - we must. stay. at home.
Now.. imagine the first day back to school after this is all over.
Now.. imagine the first day back to school after this is all over.
No masks, no restrictions, just the normal school days we remember from the past. How will you feel? What are you excited for? What will you do? This vision we all share of returning to our normal lives can be attained if we all do our part in following public health guidelines.
To reiterate, we will not achieve normalcy as we knew it if we don’t all follow the guidelines. So please, stay home, stay safe, and with each decision to follow public health guidelines we are a step closer to the future we envision.
We want to experience our teenage years—
We want to experience our teenage years—
and spend it with the people closest to us. We want to watch movies at the cinema again, spending money on large-sized popcorn that we won’t even finish. We want to travel downtown and experience the city-lights while hearing the joy and happiness from everyone around us.
We want to be able to tell our future kids how memorable our high school experience had been, and be able to indulge in nostalgia.
We all want to live our normal, crazy, adventurous and memorable lives again.
We all want to live our normal, crazy, adventurous and memorable lives again.
Staying at home is the fastest and best way to go back to enjoying the things we used to take for granted, so please, stay at home.
Yours truly,
