Over the past few days on #OpRemoteImmunity I have done a lot of reflecting on the consequences of colonization and how colonization has affected the health and well-being of indigenous peoples in Canada. 1/
On the first day of our vaccine clinic we had the chief and many elders come in for the COVID vaccine. They were excited to be vaccinated and truly led by example. They took videos and photos to post on social media to demonstrate to community members that the vaccine is safe. 2/
Today, several community members who were not scheduled for the vaccine called for appointments saying that they have friends and relatives that have gotten the vaccine and that they have decided that they want to receive it as well 3/
#OpRemoteImmunity is a led by @Ornge with extensive input from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. @HomerTien said with more eloquent words that I have - this is a small step towards reconciliation. This operation demonstrates that we are prioritizing the health of indigenous Canadians 4/
This experience had been extremely meaningful and has me reflecting on other ways that I can promote health equity and reduce disparities for indigenous peoples in my surgical practice 5/
