So February 17th is #IReadCanadian Day and I want to remind everyone that Canadians also include marginalized folks such as BIPOC, disabled folks, LGBTQ+ folks etc. Getting Canadians to read Canadian is important but it often ignores marginalized folks especially within #KidLit.
We like to default to the same authors which ultimately hurts the variety within the book industry but also the diverse readership. Also take into account intersectionality and please avoid tokenism on your lists. #IReadCanadian
Need recommendations? Follow @foldkids and head to http://thefoldcanada.org/kids . Our kids programming is almost exclusively Canadian and spotlights exclusively marginalized writers. Same for @TheFOLD_ re: adult content. We read Canadian year-round. ✌️🏾 #IReadCanadian
One more thing: you should definitely have as many marginalized communities present on your list as possible but given that we're on stolen land, you must have Indigenous WRITERS on your lists. It goes without saying but #OwnVoices is paramount. #IReadCanadian
