Ownership discussions are much more common in music than Hollywood. In most cases, movie studios own 100% of the film, not the actors or directors.

But I bet the tide will start to shift for movies.
There are a few reasons it's been different for films.

First, movies are more expensive to create. Musicians can record chart-topping albums in their bedroom. But blockbusters aren't shot in someone's backyard.

A few exceptions (Blair Witch Project), but those are rare.
Second, in movies, actors and directors are more likely to be paid market value for each project, especially if they got a good agent.

But it's not like in music where artists sign six-album deals before they become a star.
Third, since actors and directors get paid market rate, there are less issues on compensation.

Denzel might own any part of The Equalizer, but he still got paid $20M.
Fourth, actors are often less attached to their movies than artists are to their music.

In most cases, actors don't write the script or direct the production. But artists wear all those hats and more when making an album. Their attachment is stronger.
But here's why the tide might start to shift!

More and more A-List actors now have their own production companies. They work in tandem with major film studios.

It's their opportunity to earn on the back end.
In 1989, Jack Nicholson was famously paid $6M instead of his normal $10M rate so could get points on Batman when he starred as The Joker.

Nicholson ended up earning over $50M.
Nicholson's deal was rare at the time, but we'll see more.

A few examples:

- Zendaya got points on her upcoming film Malcom & Marie.

- Jessica Chastain got points for her and the cast for upcoming film.

- Both Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins got points on Wonder Woman 1984.
I bet that shift from movie theaters to streaming video will also accelerate this shift.
