I live in a state with a massively aging population—in the largest city in MT about 40% of our population will retire within 8 years; we DO NOT have the bodies to replace them. @MTGOP apparently thinks the path forward is to focus exclusively on attracting rich, white men. /1
Kids and grandkids have been very, very clear about what we want & why we're not returning to the state. We DON'T want tax breaks for the 1%, LGBTQ+ discrimination, anti-choice bills, or hacked social services. We DO want public pre-k, trails, railroads & affordable housing. /2
@GovGianforte the word is out about Montana, it has been for a long time. Now you're standing on a soapbox shouting about how you're going to take the state back in time 30 years. This is the political version of giving the middle finger to the next generation. /3 #mtleg #mtpol
Listen to the kids. Listen to the grandkids. Study what the upcoming generation WANTS and why we're moving where we are (not MT). Doubling down on the same losing policies that have gotten us here will only accelerate the aging problem, not stem it. /4
You can't cut your way to prosperity. You can't neglect infrastructure, park, trail, and medical funding for decades and then wonder why people don't want to move to cities that have no rail access, no pre-k, spiking crime rates, and haven't built a new park in 40 years. /5
"Oh, people who make over $500,000 a year got a small income tax break? Sign me up!" is a conversation I've never had with another millennial. We are the workforce, we are the generation Montana MUST attract. It's long past time to start speaking our language. /6
Older generations make fun of the gig economy but have failed to realize that because of it 30% of us (and rising) can now live ANYWHERE. We get to choose. Do you pick the state with guns in schools or the one investing in affordable childcare and new parks? I mean really. /7
