Long thread sorry!

This is super interesting & a needed conversation. I'm gonna preface whatever shit I'm about to type by saying that, as the article says, gender is a scam and words mean different things to everyone else https://twitter.com/TrevellAnderson/status/1356670554778951682
My main thing is: how do you define being nonbinary but not trans in a way that doesn't actively erase the very real experiences of countless trans people? It doesn't seem possible to me.
I saw this scenario playing out on facebook. I almost posted abt it then but didn't have the words.

I don't remember the original post, but someone commented that being nonbinary falls under the trans umbrella, and people were pissed, saying that you can't tell someone what
to identify as, which, sure.

but my understanding is:
Cis: id with assigned gender at birth
Trans: do not id with agab
Nonbinary: do not id with agab or binary genders, therefore fall under being trans

But obvs this isn't the first case of an umbrella term
within an umbrella term and there being a conflict in how people who fall under those terms identify.

There are people who will say if you're bi or a lesbian you can't call yourself gay, and ppl who, despite technically falling under the term, do not identify as being queer
But I feel like this is different? In the first example it's more of a exclusionary thing, and the second is usually because of trauma associated w the term

But w ppl who consider themselves nonbinary but not trans, it seems like a much different dynamic.
In the scenario I witnessed it was like the author described. People saying they were nonbinary were also insistent that they are not trans. When pushed to explain, it was along the lines of "I don't want to do hrt/change my name/have surgery"
To me this reduces being trans to the performative aspects of it. Binary trans people who don't conform to the norms of their gender or don't seek out gender affirming surgeries aren't any less trans than those that do.

So i don't see why or how people who consider themselves
nonbinary would then use parts of the gender binary to define themselves as definitively Not Trans

& Obvs a common thing nonbinary ppl struggle with is feeling unsure if they can consider themselves part of the trans community. So
It's weird to me see people refusing the label of cis while also working to distance themselves from the trans community. I can't help but feel like it's rooted in transphobia. "I promise I'm not cis, but no I'm also not trans."

@Hood_Biologist puts it much better than I could
I can't imagine trying to actively separate yourself from a community that sees and understands and shares your experience. I especially can't imagine that happening for reasons other than internalized prejudices you are still grappling with.
Personally, my nonbinary identity and trans identity are inextricable from one another and, in combination, have been endlessly liberating and led me to a love and appreciation of myself I might otherwise have never known.
& ultimately to me considering oneself nonbinary without being trans seems to rely on an outdated and potentially harmful idea of what it means to be trans
Anyway if you aren't cis I would love to hear ur take on this
More succinctly: if you know that pronouns and genitalia and gender expression do not equate to a person's actual gender, how do you then point to those aspects of yourself as evidence that you are not trans, while also insisting that you arent cis either?
