Environmentalists, residents and even 30 democratic lawmakers have criticized the two companies for their hesitation to provide the public with more info about the project, the location of the pipeline, potential harm to the health of residents in the counties
Industrialized hog farming has been a powerhouse industry in NC for a long time but more so since the 80s in Sampson and Duplin County. 20 yrs. ago, Smithfield Foods made a promise that they would create more advanced technologies that would be safer for ppl & the environment
But they seemingly did not. Farmers still use the lagoon and sprayfield system, a process in which they dispose of leftover hog feces and urine onto their crops, that are also harmful to the air and ground water.
I interviewed some environmentalists, lawyers and residents in Sampson and Duplin County about the project and their concerns. you can check it out here: @fayobserver https://www.fayobserver.com/story/news/2021/01/21/smithfield-project-converts-hog-waste-energy-worries-sampson-duplin-residents/4216068001/
I also spoke with hog farmers in NC about the Align RNG project and what it means for the farmers, who have made a living raising livestock for generations.
