I get so many questions from college kids asking how to work in sports/media.
Do good work even if no one is paying attention. Get a sample size to point to. I blogged/made graphics for 3 years that barely anyone saw at the time, but I pointed to them in my interview with SI

You have full control over what you do in your off hours/free time. 3+ years of journalism school and busting my ass in my free time got me an incredible opportunity.
I then worked Thursday-Monday 5pm to 1am making $40k a year. I didn’t have a single weekend day off for a year

I then pitched a social media show to my bosses at Sports Illustrated. It got approved(!)...as long as I did all the work on my off hours when I wasn’t actually scheduled and filmed/edited it myself. No one I worked with gave a shit about the show, but I made 20+ episodes
Those shows my bosses couldn’t give two shits about got me my job at the XFL, where I had to commute 5 hours a day. We fought tooth and nail to be able to post memes, with my boss @RaelEnteen fighting beside me for the same. It was a battle but it worked out tremendously.
Those memes that we battled for were 100% the reason I now have my job at Barstool.
Overarching point: Do good work you are proud of to do good work, not to get attention or praise. There are very few overnight sensations. It’s a journey

In Summer 2016 dudes with jobs not related to sports were busting our ass at @TheKnicksWall for a SMALL, audience.
@mattspendley was an accountant who is now a social media editor at @SNYtv
@kylemaggio was working in business and now runs the social show at @WhistleSports

When I was teaching I would go live from my car during lunch breaks to talk about Knicks draft picks because Twitter was blocked on school wifi. @kylemaggio would play basketball at 5 am so he could schedule posts/grind before work. @mattspendley same deal. It’s not an accident.
